Affordable housing and luxury housing are
two main residential segments in Mumbai’s real estate market. By the end of
year 2015, luxury housing segment
saw slightly sluggish growth because of significant oversupply. However, this
segment is expected to improve. For example, investments from NRIs are expected
to increase in Mumbai in subsequent years. “With easier laws for investment and
repatriation, India offers a good opportunity for real estate investment to
NRIs”, says Sunil Chopra, founder of Spacio Realtors LLP.
Mumbai affordable
housing segment not only performed better in 2015, but is expected to do
well in years to come. One of the reasons is the push that the government’s
‘Housing for All by 2022’ initiative is likely to provide. Other reason is that
first home buyers especially under the age of 35 years have limited needs and
budgets and so they look for 1 or 2BHKs under $61,000. As per Wikipedia, 65% of
India’s population is under 35 and that explains why affordable housing demand
is expected to rise in years to come.
